Class Objectives
/Class Outline
To deepen understanding of special activities in the educational field and to foster the basics of practical teaching abilities as a teacher to carry out special activities. This is a subject to obtain basic knowledge and behaviors as an elementary school teacher.
 
Class Schedule Lesson1: Lecture Outline and Viewpoint.

Lesson2: The lineage of special activities and their position in teaching practice.

Lesson3: Expectations toward special activities.

Lesson4: Teleology of Special Activities (1)
This lesson is to structurally understand the goal of special activities and to obtain knowledge of and deepen understanding of the theoretical foundation of ‘ desirable group activities’ and ‘Mentally harmonized development’

Lesson5: Teleology of Special Activities (2)
This lesson is to understand and obtain knowledge of the theoretical foundation of ‘Development of individualities’, “ Self-awareness as a part of a group’, “ Voluntarily and Practical Behavior’

Lesson6: Meaning of Special Activities.
This lesson is to examine educational meaning and deepen understanding of the values to be achieved through group experience and teaching of group actions.

Lesson7: Viewpoint needed to instruct special activities.
This lesson is to look at a sense of human as a teaching philosophy of special activities and basic viewpoints necessary for teaching.

Students will take a Midterm exam in Lesson8, write a report assignment in Lesson10, and take a final exam in Lesson15.

Handouts will be distributed in class. Blackboard will be used for note taking. This course is lecture oriented. Textbook:文部科学省『小学校学習指導要領解説 特別活動編』東洋館出版社(MEXT Commentary to the Curriculum Guidelines) , 2008. Books for reference will be introduced in class.

Preparation and
Review
Lesson1: The outline of report assignments, Midterm exam, and final exam will be explained to show an overview of this course for students to be prepared.
At each lesson, a question sheet will be utilized and present important points for preparing for related assignment and reviewing lessons.
Lesson2-7: Review the lessons and identify challenge. Submit a question sheet if you have any comment and question about the lectures. Questions from students will be answered and copies of submitted question sheets will be distributed to all students at the beginning of the following lesson for opinion exchange.

Lesson8: Midterm exam will consist of 100 fill-in-the-blank questions from Chapter 4: Special Activities of the curriculum guideline for elementary education. Students should check key words from every lesson and be prepared for the exam early.

Lesson9-15: Review the result of a Midterm exam before the latter half of the lessons will start. Check key words from a lesson and review a lesson and identify your challenge after each lesson.  During Lesson14, Review and study your assignment report based on selected excellent reports submitted by other students to identify your challenge.
Lesson15:Review and study the result of final exam and identify your challenge and overcome issues. 
Requirements Specialized subject for teacher education., Cluster 1 Required, Lateness will not be tolerated.
 
Grading Method Midterm exam(10%): Curriculum Guideline for elementary school education, Chapter 6 Special Activities.
Final exam(10%): Fundamental theories of special activities. How teachers’ instruction should be.
Report assignment (30%): Select one school event and develop an implementation plan. Summarize things to keep in mind in implementing the event and viewpoints in evaluating the implementation. (to be submitted at the end of Lesson13).
 
Practical Experience  
Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it  
Message Students are required to submit an attendance memo at every lesson. Students are expected to expand their interest, exchange opinions with other students, and deepen their learning through the comments and questions written on the memos.
It is effective to learn instruction methods of hands-on activities for instructing in special activities. I recommend students to take the Field Studies on Outdoor Activities and the Field Studies on Outdoor Education.
