Class Objectives
/Class Outline The aim of this practice is to acquire fundamental skills for archaeological researches. The plan of this lecture is to learn a skill for handling archaeological finds, and drawing potteries, lithic, metal objects on archaeological methods.

Class Schedule Class 1; Lecture on drawing method of archaeological finds, with using measuring tools.
Class 2; Observation of actual measurement work
Class 3; Measurement of earthenware (Yayoi earthenware (complete pieces)).
Class 4; Actual measurement of pottery (Yayoi earthenware (shard reconstruction)).
Class 5; Measurements  of earthenware (Sue ware (cup body)).
Class 6; Measurements  of earthenware (Sue ware (cup lid)).
Class 7; Measurements of earthenware (Sue ware (utensil stand))
Class 8; Measurements of earthenware (Sue ware (bowl))
Class 9; Observation and measurement of metallic vessels.
Class 10; easurements of metallic vessels (bronze arrowheads).
Class 11; Measurement of metallic vessels (bronze swords).
Class 12; Measurement of metallic vessels (iron tools).
Class 13; Measurement of metallic vessels (iron swords).
Class 14; Explanation on the handling of excavated materials, and actual joining and restoration of excavated artifacts.
Class 15;The same as the above (reconstruction of plaster filling).

Class 3; We have to grasp age, making methods, intended use, and it’s sign of having been used, from many archaeological finds, especially shards of earthenwear.

Requirements An archaeology major only for it’s highly-professional specialty. You have to take all lectures of “Basic Practice in Archaeology (A, B, C, D)” in your all semesters.

Grading Method Practical evaluation by your training skills (60%), and your assignments (40%).

Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it Utilizing my practical experience in excavations at the Kyoto Prefectural Buried Cultural Properties Investigation and Research Center, Ⅰwill teach techniques for observing artifacts.
