Non-native speakers of English have outnumbered native speakers of English and individuals speak different varieties of English. We will consider what kind of English we should aim for with a proper understanding of the realities of English use.

Class Objectives
/Class Outline The scope of this course encompasses empirical research and theories on Englishes in the world, while addressing the issues such as how English has speard worldwid, what kinds of English people use in different countries and regions, and how diversified English influence the power relationship between natvei and non-native speakers. We will explore the nature of language change and language power in order to better understand the role that English has played in society and the value of non-native speaker of English.

Review Make sure you complete all reading assignments (including a summary) prior to the next class. You are strongly encouraged to do online search for any unfamiliar technichal terms and research methods to deepen your understanding as much as possible. Please bring your inquires to the next class otherwise. Also, the questions to be discussed in class are welcomed (, yet please do not expect the instructor to give you answers!.) You will be also asked to present what you have learnt from the journal paper.

Requirements Students are required to read and understand professional journals written and carry class discussion in English.
