Class Objectives /Class Outline |
The expansion of higher education is a global phenomenon, and Japan is no exception. While the rise in the number of college graduates raises the question of whether a college degree alone is enough to get a good job, it also highlights the disadvantages of not going to college. If the enrollment rate in higher education increases, will the class gap in access to higher education disappear? This lecture will address these questions from the perspective of comparative sociology. Comparative Studies of Societies and Cultures II introduces the theoretical explanations that have emerged in sociology for why inequalities in educational opportunity occur, and empirically tests the validity of the theories using data. |

If you can read Japanese, reading the textbook before or after each class will be helpful for your understanding of the course content. |
Requirements |
The main class language will be English, but in case needed, the lecturer will give an additional explanation in Japanese. It is highly recommended that you take both Comparative Studies of Societies and Culture I and Comparative Studies of Societies and Culture II. Taking only Comparative Studies of Societies and Culture II is not permitted. |
