Class Objectives
/Class Outline
In order to address multi-faceted environmental issues, we need not only technical expertise but also deeper understanding on the societal aspects, including policies and economics. For example, the Great East Japan Earthquake set a new task to build new embankments along the Sanriku Coast. It is not a purely technical issue but a social one as social acceptance would be necessary to build those embankments. Even experts of structural mechanics cannot avoid or ignore it. The same thing can be said to other environmental issues; for example, Kotopanjang Dam project in Indonesia caused a strong public opposition, which was actually evoked by NGO, and ended in court. A conflict between economic development, disaster risk mitigation and environmetal protectn must be carefully argued from multiple perspectives. You, as future global leaders, must have competencies to deal with such various aspects of environmental issues.
Students are expected to learn the skills of policy analysis, especially from the holistic perspective, and some professional knowledge of environmental policy and economics through case method in this course.
