Class Objectives
/Class Outline In this course, Japanese Tourism is taken as an example to understand the basic concepts of tourism geography. The social and political background for tourism development in Japan will be discussed. Special emphasis will be on the regional structures that have been created through tourism and themselves create tourism.  Through the example of Japan, impacts of tourism and tourism development can be assessed. The following themes will be discussed:

4 Social, economic and political background
5 Tourism resources and attractions

6 Tourism resources and attractions
7 Tourism behavior

8 Tourism behavior
9 Tourism industries
10 Welcome to Japan

11 Sustainability: impacts of tourism on destinations (SDGs)
12 Resilience: tourism, disaster and pandemic

13 Special tourism destinations
14 Group Presentations
15 Group Presentations

Each theme will consist of a lecture part and a part where students work in groups or make presentations. Students will discuss one topic in tourism and report the results.

This class has to be taken together with Japanese Tourism II

Suggestions on
Preparation and
Review For each lecture, preparation will be announced in class.
For each lecture, re-read the material from the class before.
In the second half of the lecture, students need to prepare for groupwork by searching for data, reading scientific articles and summarize contents.

Requirements This class has to be taken together with Japanese Tourism II.
Any mails concerning this class should include the class name "Japanese Tourism" in the mail title.

Grading Method Tasks in class or homework: 80 points
Group presentation and report: 20 points
If students miss a class, they will miss the assignment in that class and therefore the points. In case of illness, some of the tasks can be handed in later to make up for the missing points, if the teacher is informed before the class.
