Class Objectives
     Students are expected to understand complex relationship between natural disasters and human culture. They are also expected to acquire capability to assess disaster risks, to participate in local disaster prevention, to contribute to reconstructing local community, and to transmit memory of disasters.

Class outline
     Natural disaster is a serious threat to human society. Therefore, people have tried to reduce disaster risks, and local communities were reconstructed when they were damaged by disasters. In our time, the relationship between natural disasters and human society is changing due to global warming and globalization. This lecture course poses a question “How should we cope with natural disasters.” Three themes are examined to approach this question: 1) mechanism of disasters and coexistence of human society and natural disasters, 2) local disaster prevention and disaster culture, and 3) resilience and the transmission of disaster experience in local community.

1) Definition and philosophy of disaster and geography.

Mechanism of disasters and coexistence of human society and natural disasters
2) Volcanic disaster.
3) Earthquake disaster.
4) Tsunami disaster.
5) Landslide disaster.
6) River flood disaster.
7) Heavy snow disaster.

Local disaster prevention and disaster culture
8) Hazard map.
9) Relationships between public assistance, mutual assistance, and self-help.
10)  Disaster culture

Resilience and the transmission of disaster experience in local community
11) Evacuation and living at shelter.
12) Reconstruction process of local community.
13) Transformation of local community after disaster.
14) Transmission of disaster experience and disaster education.

Conclusion

Students are expected to prepare for lecture by researching keywords.

Review
Students are expected to review the lecture contents after each lecture for 1 hour. This lecture course demands 4 research papers (4 hours for each paper). 
Requirements None 
Grading Method 1) Attitude toward class accounts for 20%.
2) Four search papers account for 80%.
