Class Objectives /Class Outline |
Globalization has brought about such serious issues as deepening gaps between the rich and the poor and irreversible environmental destruction. In terms of Peace Studies, they are representing violence “built into the structure” of modern world. Throughout the course, students will learn the modern world systems and issues brought about by more recent globalization based on neoliberalism. Towards the end of the course, they will discuss and make a presentation on sustainable interaction between human and environment. |

Suggestions on Preparation and Review |
1. Understand modernity of scientific technologies. 2. Learn history of aids to developing countries after the Second World War. 3. Compare and learn the differences between the notion of “peace” in traditional international politics and that in peace studies. 4. Learn the notion of structural violence advocated by Johan Galtung. 5. Understand neoliberalism which constitutes today’s economic paradigm as well as learn the international discussion on sustainable development. 6. Drawing on the case of Bangladesh, learn neoliberal ways of modernization and analyze their negative impacts on the developing countries. 7. Watch a TV program on Bangladesh. 8. Consider the modernity of nuclear technology. 9. Watch a TV program on the Operation Crossroads carried out by the United States government in 1946 and consider structural violence in developing nuclear weapons. 10. Consider the modernity of nuclear power technology. 11. Learn the historical process of constructing the Fukushima dai-ichi nuclear power plant and looks into the ways in which “safety myth” of nuclear power technology was left behind among politicians and engineers in Japan. 12. Watch a TV program which documents that despite some of the American engineers in charge of the construction of the Fukushima dai-ichi nuclear power plant in the mid-1960s have questioned the power plant’s “safety,” their argument was ignored. 13. Students discuss modernity of nuclear power and the reason of Japan’s introduction of it. In so doing, they also consider how men should interact with environment. 14. Group presentations. 15. Submit the final report. |
