In this course, we will discuss various cultural representations in modern France from the perspectives of French culture experienced by Japanese people and will identify various characteristics of French culture.

Lesson 3: French Experience of Japanese People 1 “The Stranger” (Tsuguharu Foujita, Painter)
Lesson 4: French Experience of Japanese People 2 “Experience” (Arimasa Mori, Philosopher)
Lesson 5: French Experience of Japanese People 3 “Hybrid Culture” (Shuichi Kato, Critic)
Lesson 6: Japan and France
Lesson 7: Architecture as Culture
Lesson 8: City as Culture
Lesson 9: France before the Revolution
Lesson 10: France after the Revolution
Lesson 11: Colonialism

Requirements Students are required to have proficiency in French equivalent to having taken the Basic French course. 
Grading Method Evaluation is made on the basis of papers (approximately 70%) and students’ comments in class (approximately 30%).
