In this course, we will discuss various cultural representations in modern France from the perspectives of French culture experienced by Japanese people and will identify various characteristics of French culture. |

Lesson 1: Introduction of Class Objectives and Reference Books Lesson 2: About Culture and Civilization Lesson 3: French Experience of Japanese People 1 “The Stranger” (Tsuguharu Foujita, Painter) Lesson 4: French Experience of Japanese People 2 “Experience” (Arimasa Mori, Philosopher) Lesson 5: French Experience of Japanese People 3 “Hybrid Culture” (Shuichi Kato, Critic) Lesson 6: Japan and France Lesson 7: Architecture as Culture Lesson 8: City as Culture Lesson 9: France before the Revolution Lesson 10: France after the Revolution Lesson 11: Colonialism Lesson 12: Immigration Policy in France Lesson 13: Commonwealth Principles and Integration Lesson 14: Multi-ethnicity and Multilingualism Lesson 15: What is French Culture? Each class is scheduled as above, but the content may change in consideration of circumstances of the moment in France. Moreover, students are required to make a presentation based on a topic covered in class. |
