・Knowledge and understanding of "Japanese and Japanese culture"  and "foreign languages and foreign culture" which are prerequisite abilities for communication with peoples in different culture and areas. 
Class Objectives
/Class Outline
This course outlines the cultural history of the German-speaking world, with a focus on the development of the idea of "Bildung" (personality development, formation, culture). Short texts (including literary works) are used to explain the problems of modernisation in the German cultural sphere and the challenges it faces today. Basic knowledge of politics, religion and history is developed. Comparisons with Japan are also encouraged. 
Class Schedule This course will be taught in Japanese.

Session 1: Guidance, trivia about the German-speaking world
Sessions 2-4: The Age of Enlightenment (Lessing, Kant, etc.)
Sessions 5-8: Weimar classicism: what is 'Bildung'? Birth of the 'Bildungsroman' (Schiller, Goethe, Herder, Humboldt, Hegel)
Session 9: Criticism of the Bildungsroman' (Romanticism, E. T. A. Hoffmann, etc.)
Sessions 10 - 12: The whereabouts of 'Bildung' until around 1900 (Nietzsche, Fontane, Thomas Mann, Kafka, etc.)

Sessions 13 - 15:  post-war to the present (Böll, Grass, Adorno, etc.)
*Students will give a presentation on a topic of their own choice, which will be discussed by all.
The timing of the presentations will be decided in consideration of the relevance of the contents of each session.
