Class Objectives
/Class Outline
The world is full of unexplained things, and university research is the way to find out what they are. Researchers devote their lives to research, forgetting to eat and sleep and working day and night. This is because they find it fascinating. There are countless interesting research subjects, but my speciality, extreme weather research, is first class interesting! The main goal of the class is to share this with the students, and to use it as an opportunity to think together about the biggest 'problem' of the climate crisis: why the majority of people are indifferent to it.
Class Schedule Title: "Abnormal Weather Becoming the New Normal: How the Earth is Going on! What Should We Do?"
Instructor: Yoshihiro Tachibana (Graduate School of Bioresources, Mie University)

Global warming is one of the causes of the frequent occurrence of abnormal weather, and if humans leave it as it is, abnormal weather will become normal weather, i.e. an era in which the occurrence of abnormal weather will become the new normal. Japan's four seasons will become "two seasons" with only summer and winter. The climate crisis is the biggest crisis of mankind. Many people do not have a sense of crisis, and the majority of people are still indifferent or regard it as someone else's problem. In Japan, in particular, there are more people who are indifferent than in Europe. In the lecture, 1) the relationship between abnormal weather, two seasons and global warming will be explained, 2) why so many people have become indifferent, and 3) what should we do? The lecture will be facilitated by the students and the lecturer.

The progress of the lecture will be based on the interaction with the students, so the lecture will not proceed according to the schedule described below. The more the lecture proceeds as planned, the less interesting it will be. It is more interesting when the lecture does not proceed according to the syllabus. There is no need for a syllabus. It is just as interesting to watch a live TV program without a scenario as it is to watch a recorded program with a scenario.

Day 1: Why are extreme hot summer hitting Japan in the world?
The key is the amplification of Arctic warming and the meandering of westerly winds. The Arctic is not a fire on the other side of the world! Extreme weather events cascading around the world.
Day 2: Ocean anomalies and the chain of extreme weather events.
Unprecedentedly high sea temperatures and boiling seas amplify extreme weather events. The Kuroshio Large Meander also amplifies extreme weather events. One extreme weather event leads to another! A chain of heavy rain and hot summer. Prolonged summers. Why are heavy snowfalls increasing with global warming?
Day 3: "Abnormal Weather Becoming the New Normal: How the Earth is Going on! What Should We Do?"
From a country of four seasons to a country of two? What is the tipping point?

This class will be held from 25 (Wed) to 27 (Fri) September, 2024.

Suggestions on
Preparation and
Review
Preparation is the thievery. If you prepare for the lecture, you will lose excitement, become drowsy, and lose half the pleasure of the lecture. Do not prepare for the lecture. If you feel that the lecture is interesting, you will voluntarily try to learn more about it and do so. This is called 'review'.
Requirements
Grading Method Grading is based on the degree to which the student found the lecture interesting. Each student is asked to appeal the degree of interest. The way of appealing is varied, including verbal appeal, written appeal, appeal with facial expressions, appeal using the body, etc., and is also combined with the individuality.
Practical Experience
Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it
Message In the lectures, we will touch on issues in university research and university education, using extreme weather as a topic. I believe that the syllabus is one of the factors that destroy universities. I will talk about that too.
Other
Please fill in the class improvement questionnaire which is carried out on all classes.
Instructors will reflect on your feedback and utilize the information for improving their teaching.
