/Class Outline
Serving as basic orientation for students' university education, the aim of the seminar is to stimulate students' intellectual curiosity, foster active, heuristic, explorative learning, and lay the foundations for integrated arts and sciences. To this end, students will learn fundamental research skills and the methods of scientific thought. Students will also undertake "mini research projects" through group-work, enabling them to practice the basic skills they have learned in actual research.

Preparation and
Review
Session 1 Try to make a list of the different academic fields that came up during discussions at the Orientation Camp.
Session 2 Talk to friends and students in higher years, and try to make a list of what areas you found particularly interesting, and what kind of learning you hope to achieve while at university.
Session 3 Read some books about research methodology, and think about what information means in relation to research, and about what data collection means in the era of the Internet.
Session 4 Read some books about research methodology, and think about what the best ways of collating data are.
Session 4 Read some books about research methodology, and summarize the important points to focus on when preparing to give a presentation.
Session 5,6 Think about what the main problems facing society today are.
Session 7,8 Do some research on the sub-topic that you were assigned during group-work.
Session 9,10 Collate the information that you researched in an easily understandable form, and do some follow-up research on the aspects that questions were asked about during the presentation, and the aspects that other people found difficult to understand. Think about how the sub-topic that you were assigned relates to the whole, and summarize this relationship in an easy-to-understand way.
Session 11,12 Try to develop a group presentation that is easily understood and impressive.
Session 13,14 Undertake discussion, and think deeply about the topics that are raised in the discussion.
Session 15 Write up a report referencing the discussion of the research topic as a whole.

Grading Method There will be comprehensive evaluation based on the student's participation in group-work, the contribution made to the presentation session, and the quality of the individual reports.
