The class will be conducted primarily by means of interactive activities in the classroom. However, a flipped learning approach will be utilised, in which students prepare for in-person discussions using materials uploaded onto Moodle.

学習の成果By the end of the course, successful students will have a thorough understanding of many important aspects of British and American culture, and they will be able to communicate effectively in a wide variety of cross-cultural situations. 
授業の目標・概要等 This course follows on from "British and American Culture and Literature III”.  Students will further expand their knowledge of British and American society and culture, and they will be encouraged to think critically and draw their own conclusions about important issues. 
授業計画 第1回  Introduction and overview of course
第2回  Defining Culture: Students will discuss the meaning of 'culture', and look at the various ways of identifying cultural groups
第3回  Defining Culture (contd.)
第4回  Government and Politics: Students will examine the British and American constitutions, political systems, and legal systems
第5回  Government and Politics (contd.)
第6回  Social Issues: Topics for discussion will include the environment, crime, and health
第7回  Social Issues (contd.)
第8回  Review of lessons 1-7: Students will make presentations in small groups; a review test will be given
第9回  Literature: Students will investigate the works of some influential British, Irish, and American writers
第10回  Literature (contd.)
第11回  Religion, Beliefs, and Values: Students will discuss and compare the beliefs and values held by people in different cultures

第13回  Varieties of English: Topics will include the role of English as a global language, and British dialects and accents

第15回  Review of lessons 9-14: Small-group presentations

Regular home assignments will be given, as well as a final exam and report.

Please note that the exact content of the syllabus may change according to the students' particular interests and goals.

Students will be expected to prepare for each week's class in advance, and to review the previous week's lesson. 
履修上の注意
受講条件等
TOEIC 650 or equivalent required.  The class will be limited to a maximum of 30 students.  A variety of materials will be used including textbooks, newspaper and magazine articles, material from the Internet, TV broadcasts, and DVD recordings.  Students will be required to  participate in discussions and debates, make short presentations, and carry out mini surveys.  Regular home assignments will be given. 
成績評価の基準等 Students will be evaluated on the basis of their participation in class, home assignments, and the final exam and report.
