Goals
Students will understand the purpose and function of legal documents within specific cases and procedural contexts.
They will also acquire foundational drafting skills based on the distinctive characteristics of legal documents—such as the requirement that each statement must have a legal basis and the necessity for clarity and unambiguous expression.
Overview

Students will be given assignments related to legal document drafting in advance.
During class, instruction will consist primarily of interactive Q&A and commentary based on the submitted answers.

In the first half of the course, students will gain an overall understanding—through concrete cases—of the roles and objectives that legal documents serve within legal procedures.
Linked with the study of “elements of claims,” students will examine the structure, composition, and style of legal documents, and work to develop basic drafting skills, focusing mainly on litigation documents such as complaints and answers.

In the second half, students will explore the methods and key considerations involved in drafting fundamental legal documents—including but not limited to litigation-related documents—while connecting these skills to their understanding of substantive and procedural law.
