The purpose of this class, which focuses on China, is to understand the structure and nature of Asia. We will investigate the problems of Chinese constitutionalism from the first half of the 20 century to the present day, focusing on the perspectives of Western countries and Japan; we will also examine the relationship between the Chinese Central Government and local powers.

Lesson 1 Be able to explain, in your own words, the key perspectives for thinking about the constitution.
Lesson 2 Develop a deeper understanding of the major ideological challenges facing China during this period.
Lesson 3 Understand the constitutional issues from the late Qing period through the Beiyang Government era.
Lesson 4 Accurately understand the differences between Japan and China regarding central–local relations.
Lesson 5 Accurately understand China’s central–local relations (including ethnic autonomous regions) and the political line of the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang).

Lesson 7 Examine constitutional issues from the perspectives of communist ideology and traditional Chinese conceptions of political authority.

Lesson 13 Understand the constitutional significance of Taiwan’s democratization and the breakdown of “One Country, Two Systems” in Hong Kong.
Lesson14   Understand how the People’s Republic of China accepted and incorporated the concept of “socialist rule of law” that was advanced within the socialist camp after 1950.
Lesson15 Examine the political processes within the Chinese Communist Party in the 1950s concerning the “socialist rule of law,” and understand how these developments relate to the contemporary relationship between politics and the law in China.
