Class Objectives /Class Outline |
This course aims to deepen students’ understanding of the most advanced research topics in tectonic geomorphology and active fault studies, to foster a proactive attitude toward pursuing such research, and to develop the ability to conduct research using rational and systematic methods. The course enables students to understand the methods for identifying and evaluating active faults on land and beneath the seafloor in coastal regions, as well as the limitations of these approaches. Although active faults have repeatedly moved over the past several hundred thousand years, the geomorphological and stratigraphic records that can be directly confirmed are limited, and there are inherent constraints in scientifically reconstructing past fault activity. Taking into account such epistemological limitations and uncertainties, the course aims to equip students with the ability to appropriately assess seismic hazard in specific regions. |
