Class Objectives
/Class Outline
The course aims to foster an understanding of the most advanced research topics in tectonic geomorphology and active fault studies, to cultivate a proactive attitude toward pursuing such research, and to develop the ability to conduct research using rational and systematic methods.
To build a foundation for understanding surface deformation, the course provides an overview of fundamental topics, including the relationship between earthquakes and active faults, tectonic geomorphology, Quaternary science, and submarine topography. In addition, after developing an understanding of the basic systems of nuclear power plants, students examine the current state of safety measures against earthquakes generated by active faults, methods for evaluating fault activity, and the characteristics of earthquakes originating from active faults. Through consideration of issues related to critical coastal facilities, the course encourages students to reflect on the nature of human life in the Japanese archipelago, where active crustal deformation is a prominent feature.
