This course is conducted in a seminar format and consists of a close reading of Paradise Lost by John Milton, analyzing its theological, political, and poetic structures from multiple perspectives. No summaries will be permitted; every line will be read and examined verbatim. Students will read the text aloud line by line and will be responsible for providing a Japanese translation as well as grammatical explanation. |

No specific edition is prescribed; however, it is strongly recommended that students consult the notes by Alastair Fowler in Milton: Paradise Lost (Longman, 2006).
