Class Objectives /Class Outline |
The aim of this course is to cultivate the ability to interpret waka—central to premodern kana literature—accurately and in close attention to their poetic expression, and to situate such interpretations within the historical development of waka.
In this course, we will take up the Goshūi Wakashū. By producing a transcription and critical edition of the base text, recording textual variants, comparing existing commentaries, investigating usage examples, and adding our own annotations, we will work toward precise and well-substantiated interpretations through detailed modern Japanese translations.
In the previous academic year, we read the spring poems in sequence. This year, by reading across multiple books (maki), we also aim to consider the overall structure and conception of the anthology as a whole. |
