Liberal Arts Education
As pre-specialized education, which is organically linked to specialized education, Foundation Courses are aimed at providing students with the basic knowledge necessary to understand specialized studies in their chosen areas, and thereby providing them w
Expected OutcomeTo understand, acquire, and be able to explain the logical structure and system of the basic disciplines in accordance with each subject and the knowledge and skills necessary for further academic development.
Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Mechanics is one of the mainstays of physics and engineering as well as electromagnetics, and hence an important subject for students in the department of science and engineering as a foundation to be acquired.

Our goal in General Mechanics is to systematically provide the principles and laws of mechanics for engineering students. Students coming out of this class should have a deep conceptual understanding of classical Newtonian mechanics. This course, General Mechanics II, provides instruction in dynamics of multiparticle system and rigid body on the basis of the dynamics of one-particle provided in General Mechanics I.
Class Schedule Lesson 1: Two-body problem; reduced mass and relative motion of two particles
Lesson 2: Motion of planets governed by Kepler’s law
Lesson 3: Collision phenomena and conservation law of linear momentum
Lesson 4: Center of mass (centroid) of a system of particles, integral formulation of the center of mass for a continuous body, total momentum and its time derivative, motion of the center of mass.
Lesson 5: Total angular momentum of mass system and its time derivative, moment of force, kinetic energy
Lesson 6: Motion of rigid body and degree of freedom
Lesson 7: Rotation of rigid body with a fixed axis and the moment of inertia
Lesson 8:The examples of moment of inertia for some typical rigid bodies
Lesson 9:  Rigid body pendulum
Lesson 10: Planar motion of rigid bodies
Lesson 11: Kinetic energy of rigid bodies
Lesson 12: Static equilibrium of rigid body
Lesson 13:Translational relative motion and fictitious forces
Lesson 14: Rotational relative motion and fictitious forces
Lesson 15: Coriolis force and centrifugal force
