2. Familiarize themselves with basic terminology related to the Industrial Revolution and modernization in 19th-century British society.

Through close readings of primary texts, this course will explore the impact of the Industrial Revolution and modernization on 19th-century British society, with a particular focus on the traditional agricultural industry. Additionally, the course will explore central themes in the novel.

Students are expected to consider the sociocultural characteristics of 19th-century British society, as well as the ways in which they are similar to or different from the characteristics of early modern Japanese society. It is essential that students read the required chapters before each class. 
Requirements There are no specific prerequisites for this course.  
Grading Method Term papers and active class participation are required for this course.

Message The main objectives of this class are to learn English while understanding the key themes of the novel. Students should prepare the listed textbook in advance. During class, we will read and translate English sentences into Japanese one by one. Students will be called on individually, so be sure to prepare ahead of time.
