To help students develop 1) the basic knowledge and skills to understand English spoken at a natural speed, and 2) the ability to understand a speaker’s intentions with reference to his/her sociocultural background.

Requirements If a student is absent for more than one-third of the classes, they will, in principle, not be permitted to take the final examination. 
Grading Method Assessment will be conducted based on the following criteria:

(1) Content and Speaker Intention
Ability to understand the content of various types of discourse.
Ability to appropriately comprehend the speaker’s purpose and intention.

(2) Accuracy of Comprehension and Inferencing Skills
Ability to grasp key points from listening input and infer related information.
Ability to understand a range of spoken language used in everyday situations and make appropriate judgments according to context.

(3) Vocabulary, Grammar, and Phonological Recognition
Possession of the vocabulary, grammar, and phonological knowledge (e.g., pronunciation and intonation) necessary for listening comprehension, and the ability to apply this knowledge effectively.

Grades will be determined comprehensively based on learning activities in class and the results of examinations, according to the following weighting:
Assessment Breakdown
・Examinations (including quizzes, short tests, midterm exam, and final exam): 40~60%
・Assignments (in-class and out-of-class tasks, listening assignments, etc.): 40~60%

Grading Scale
Final grades (out of 100 points) will be assigned as follows:
90–100: Excellent (S)
80–89: Very Good (A)
70–79: Good (B)
60–69: Satisfactory (C)
59 or below: Fail (D)
Note: Class participation and assignment submission status may be considered as supplementary factors in the evaluation.
