Class Objectives /Class Outline	Read the annotated texts on the Bonmōkyō precepts on “Selling Alcohol” and “Not Drinking Alcohol” produced in Tang China, Silla, and Japan, to understand how this precept was practiced in East Asia. Additionally, examine the actual conditions and brewing methods of monastic sake in 16th-century Japan and compare them with Saijo's sake brewing.

Suggestions on Preparation and Review	Lesson 1: Students who have not yet acquired a basic ability to read Classical Chinese are expected to engage in independent study using preparatory textbooks for university entrance examinations or similar materials. In addition, tools necessary for reading Buddhist Classical Chinese texts will be introduced during the class; students should consult library resources and become familiar with how to use these tools in advance. Lesson 2-3: During the class, the instructor will prepare and present a sample handout demonstrating methods of textual analysis. Students are expected to learn how to use the relevant research tools so that they can subsequently prepare similar materials on their own. Lessons 4–14: Students are expected to participate actively in the class. Assigned students are required to prepare handout materials and submit them to the instructor prior to the class session (the instructor will print the materials and bring them to class). Lessons 15: In Japan, sake was historically brewed in temples, and records of brewing techniques are preserved in temple archives. Saijō in Higashihiroshima City, where Hiroshima University is located, is one of Japan’s well-known sake-producing regions. Through a brewery tour, students will gain firsthand insight into how sake-brewing techniques have changed since the sixteenth century. Details of the tour schedule will be announced in class.
