Class Objectives

This course aims (1) to cultivate the ability to analyze and evaluate arguments, and (2) to acquire knowledge of central theories and concepts in ethics.

By engaging with complex and abstract moral problems, students will develop the ability to address more familiar and practical issues concerning killing and harming others.

Topics covered in this course include assisted dying, mental illness, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), moral enhancement, dual use, and neuroscience.

No examinations or final papers will be conducted, as grades will be based on overall contribution to class discussions and short reflection papers submitted after each session.

Preparation and
Review
For each topic announced in advance, students are expected to conduct their own preliminary research and come prepared for class.
In particular, preparing beforehand for interactive sessions will enhance the quality of group discussions. 
Requirements Students must register for both Ethics, Killing and Violence I and Ethics, Killing and Violence II.
・Attendance will be determined based on class attendance and submission of short reports.
・Students arriving more than 20 minutes after the start of class will be marked absent (although they may still participate).
・Students who leave class early without a valid reason will also be marked absent. 
Grading Method Class Contribution: 50%
Active participation in class discussions.

Post-class Short Reports: 50%
Students’ own views on the topics discussed in group discussions.
