This course aims to deepen students’ understanding of the themes discussed in Anthropology of Japan I by reading academic articles and essays related to each topic, followed by student presentations and class discussions.

The themes covered are the same as those in Anthropology of Japan I, including perspectives on Japanese society; family and self; community and norms; schools and the disciplinary society; companies and salaryman culture; the state and bureaucracy; and citizens and civil society.

Students are required to read carefully the assigned reading materials every week; make a presentation and discussion based on the reading.  
Requirements This class should be registered together with the course of "Anthropology of Japan I". Taking only "Anthropology of Japan II" is not permitted. Middle to advanced level of English proficiency is required. 
Grading Method Evaluation will be made based on active participation to the discussion, presentation of the readings, and term paper.
