Class Objectives /Class Outline |
This course examines the fundamental topics and theories of cultural anthropology, with a focus on cross-cultural understanding. In particular, it adopts the perspectives of "anthropology of development" and "political anthropology" as key approaches to analyzing the various forms of power operating in the contemporary world. The course also explores the relevance and significance of anthropological perspectives and methods for understanding and analyzing contemporary phenomena in an increasingly globalized world. Beginning with introductory discussions of culture, ethnography, and cultural relativism, the class addresses topics such as gender, subjectivity, and identity; poverty, development, and welfare; migration and globalization; conflict, war, and peace; environment and resource management; disaster and risk. Students are required to complete the assigned readings and also make a presentation and discussion based on the readings. A middle- to advanced-level proficiency in English, including the ability to read academic texts and engage in logical debate, is required for all participants. |

| Requirements |
The students are required to enroll for the class of "Anthropology of Globalization II". Taking only "Anthropology of Globalization I" is not permitted. Middle to advanced-level English ability, including reading the academic text and engaging in logical debate, is required for all the participants. |

The score will be made based on the evaluation of students attitude and participation during the class, ability to complete the reading and writting assignment for each class, and exam, or term paper. |
