Class Objectives
/Class Outline
This course deals with the cultural exchange of Chinese characters between Japan and China during the Muromachi period in Japanese history. The class will understand the situations in which the Gozan system was adopted and what kind of texts were produced and written in the Chinese writing style. In the class, literary materials created in characteristic scenes symbolizing the Gozan will be introduced and explained. Then, themes based on the materials will be set and discussed in each group to deepen students' understanding of the culture of Chinese characters.

From the first to the fifteenth class, the contents of the next class will be communicated in the previous class. In some cases, students will be given small assignments related to the content of the class. Students will be able to deepen their understanding of the class content by working on these assignments.

Grading Method The student will be judged comprehensively on the basis of his/her performance in each short report, final assignment report, and approach to the class.
