Class Status within Liberal Arts Education | The "Advanced Seminar" will be held to give students opportunities to practically utilize their comprehensive knowledge to create new value and solve problems in society, based on their learning in the "Introductory Seminar for First-Year Students". It is designed for students to cultivate problem-finding and problem-solving skills through the study and discussion of cutting-edge topics and hands-on learning in small classes that transcend school and grade boundaries, and to develop challenge, presentation, and leadership skills. |
---|
Expected Outcome | In combination with the "Introduction to University Education" and the "Introductory Seminar for First-Year Students", students are expected to: 1. Form an independent learning attitude 2. Improve their problem-finding and problem-solving skills 3. Improve their logical and critical thinking skills 4. Improve their reading comprehension, expression, presentation, and discussion skills 5. Improve their communication and leadership skills |
Class Objectives /Class Outline |
【Outline of the course】 In this class, students will learn and understand the basic concepts of the legal system and debate logically and persuasively about various familiar legal issues that are the subject of TV, newspaper news and “lawyer-oriented” dramas, in order to cultivate problem-finding and problem-solving skills and to improve presentation and documentation skills. In addition, the course aims to improve students' presentation and writing skills. |
Class Schedule |
The class will be conducted in an omnibus format by law school faculty members (Kenji Shuda, Kazuhiro Noda, and Koichi Tamura are scheduled for 2025). Students will read a preliminary assignment on a familiar conflict case as instructed by the faculty members, and the class will develop through a question-and-answer session and discussion based on their own reports.
The theme will be simple case problems related to cancellation of contracts made by minors, what is prescription, defect troubles in automobile sales, responsibility of guarantors, troubles over land boundaries, and troubles in service provision by English conversation schools, etc., as dispute cases familiar to students and their relatives.
(1) Can disputes be solved by memorizing the articles of “Rokuho Zensho”? (Initial guidance) (2) - (8) Seminar: Exercises on dispute cases.
No examinations will be given. Students may be asked to submit a pre-class report on each disputed case. |

Requirements |
Students should have an interest in “law” and social issues related to “law.” It is better if the student has taken the Liberal Arts course “Constitution of Japan,” but it is not required. The maximum number of participants is limited to 15. If there are many applicants for the course, we may draw lots for 15 students by asking them to submit a 200-word motivation for taking the course. |
Grading Method |
Evaluation will be based on the content of reports and submissions for each class session. |
