Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Understand the overall picture of water-rock reactions occurring in seafloor hydrothermal zones and learn about water-rock reactions and life-available energy in hydrothermal active zones on solar-system bodies that hold present and past Earth and oceans. They will also learn the basics of geochemical modelling methods for these.
Class Schedule Lecture 1: Earth's current submarine hydrothermal system
Lecture 2: Hydrothermal systems of the primitive Earth
Lecture 3: Water-rock reactions
Lecture 4: Geochemical modelling 1 (exercise)
Lecture 5: Water-rock reactions in the extraterrestrial ocean
Lecture 6: life-supporting energy
Lecture 7: Geochemical modelling 2 (exercise)

Suggestions on
Preparation and
Review
Various organisms use some kind of chemical substance to metabolise energy. Primitive micro-organisms in submarine hydrothermal systems use chemicals released from rocks to metabolise energy. Keep this in mind when attending lectures and exercises.
Requirements
Grading Method Attendance, exercises.
Practical Experience
Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it
Message Please make fun of trial and error about how to explore extraterrestrial life.
Other
Please fill in the class improvement questionnaire which is carried out on all classes.
Instructors will reflect on your feedback and utilize the information for improving their teaching.
