Biology
(Abilities and Skills)
・Based on basic knowledge which is already acquired, to obtain the following experimental skills in order to practice research: 1) Basic observation skills and skills to manage experiments. 2) Ability to record observed natural phenomena. 3) Ability to collect and assess data.
Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Choose from three different courses (Biological Monitoring Course; Evolutionary Development/Omics Analysis Course; Evolutionary Development/Genome Editing Course) according to your purpose.
In the Biological Monitoring Course, students learn about biological diversity and phylogenetic evolution by collecting and analyzing data from both field surveys and molecular biological analysis in the laboratory.
In the Evolutionary Development and Omics Analysis course, students learn about the diversity and commonalities of animal development through observations and experiments that mainly focus on the development of marine deuterostomes.
In the Evolutionary Development/Genome Editing course, students conduct genome editing experiments using marine invertebrates and learn about the principles and applications of genome editing from the perspective of evolutionary embryology.
All the courses cover basic experiments and analyzes related to next-generation sequencing.
Class Schedule The Biological Monitoring Course:
The following content will be held in an intensive format for 4 days and 3 nights.
1. Lecture on ecological and morphological diversity of living things
2. Observing and collecting marine animals on uninhabited islands, mainly in the intertidal zone
3. Collecting, observing and recording plankton
4. Identification of observed and collected marine animals
5. DNA extraction from environmental samples

The Evolutionary Development/Omics Analysis Course:
The following content will be held in an intensive format for 5 days and 4 nights.
1. Lectures on fertilization, development, and evolution (partially conducted in English)
2. Observation of development and anatomy of deuterostomes (sea urchins, sea squirts, acorn worms, amphioxus, etc.)
3. Next-generation sequencing analysis of gene expression and its regulation during development

The Evolutionary development/genome editing course:
The following content will be held in an intensive format for 5 days and 4 nights.
1. Lectures on fertilization, development, evolution, and genome editing (partially conducted in English)
2. Observation of development and anatomy of deuterostomes (sea urchins, sea squirts, acorn worms, amphioxus, etc.)
3. Gene function analysis experiments such as genome editing

Online presentation:
Each participant presents the results such as analysis and others conducted in the course. There is an integrated discussion with participants from other courses.

Suggestions on
Preparation and
Review
It is advisable to read general books and illustrated encyclopedias on the diversity and phylogenetic classification of marine animals. Depending on the content of the course you are taking, it may be helpful to review introductory books on environmental DNA, next-generation sequencing, genome editing, etc. during practical training. We also recommend preparation and review of general large-scale data analysis in the biological field.
Requirements Application form has to be submitted to the Support Office for the fields of Science (undergraduate course), Hiroshima University by the closing date.
You can take multiple courses, however, you can obtain the credit only for one course.

The students with any kind of allergy and/or idiosyncrasy must inform us in advance.
You will be responsible for the cost of your transportation and food. Please note that due to the circumstances of the place where the meal is ordered, it is not possible to specify or change the ingredients.

The data, assignments, and all that collected, created, and submitted by the students in relation to the class may be used and published as teaching materials for the Hiroshima University in the future. Please note that when you submit your request to take this class, we will treat it as your agreement to the above.
Grading Method A grading will be given by evaluating practical attitude, presentation and report, comprehensively.
Practical Experience
Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it
Message Open Marine Course is a valuable opportunity to interact with students from other universities from all over the country, and we hope that it will be an opportunity to reconsider your understanding of natural science from a broader perspective. We hope that students on campus (graduate students can also take this course) will participate.
Other The web site for the marine laboratory is < https://www.hiroshima-u.ac.jp/rinkai >.

Please fill in the class improvement questionnaire which is carried out on all classes.
Instructors will reflect on your feedback and utilize the information for improving their teaching.
