/Class Outline This course examines various aspects of life, customs, and culture in the Edo period, with a focus on books and publishing.

Class Schedule Lesson 1–2: Introduction – An Invitation to Book Studies
Lesson 3–4: Books and Publishing Culture in Early Modern Japan
Lesson 5–6: Reading and the Formation of “Knowledge”
Lesson 7–8: Pleasure Quarters (yūkaku), Love, and Harmony between Men and Women: Sexuality, Women, and Gender in Early Modern Japan
Lesson 9–10: The Body of Reproduction (umu) and Illness (yamu): Theories of the Body in Early Modern Japan
Lesson 11–12: Disasters and Omens (tenpen chiyō): Calamities and Strange Phenomena in Early Modern Japan
Lesson 13–14: Sacred Sites (meisho), Religious Exhibitions (kaichō), and Pilgrimages of Gratitude (okage-mairi): Religion and Travel in Early Modern JapanEarly Modern Japan
