Class Schedule |
lesson1 Take a “stakeholder approach”! Who is a stakeholder? Am I? Stop kidding!
I explain the stakeholder approach. You have to understand it because you will use it in the next class!
Keywords: stakeholder approach
lesson2 The complex, wonderful, real world. Let's role play!
wild tiger population is shrinking: it is only about a few thousand. In your village, some wild tigers lives.
You are a stakeholder: you are either a local government officer, a forest department officer, an indigenous villager, a migrated villager, an NGO who takes care of local people’s rights, or an NGO who takes care of wildlife. Can you all make a good plan to protect "wild tigers"?
lesson3 Let’s conserve biodiversity for ourselves! Services from biodiversity
If you take a conservation-oriented approach, the reason may be to receive “services from biodiversity.” We cannot live without these services. But this approach is also very dangerous. It means that we cannot conserve wildlife that does not work for us. Keywords: ecosystem services/services from biodiversity/human-centric/utilitarianism
Conflict between generations. Can you conserve resources for future generations?
lesson4 Let’s conserve biodiversity for future generations!
Maybe someone will think, “Let’s conserve biodiversity for future generations.” But this approach does not make sense in terms of modern ethics. I will explain the modern ethics framework that should reject this approach.
Keywords: ethics/reciprocity/responsibility/rights/obligation/Hans Jonas/Joel Feinberg
lesson5 Let’s conserve biodiversity for animals! Animal liberation!
An idealistic idea to conserve wildlife may be to avoid “speciesism.” Do you practice discrimination? Your behavior may be discriminating against wildlife.
Keywords: Peter Singer/speciesism/animal liberation/Roderick Frazier Nash/Aldo Leopold/ecosystem-centric/land ethics
