Class Objectives /Class Outline |
To learn the knowledge and get the ability necessary to plan and design chemical processes. The actual contents are as follows. 1) Understanding of the background and properties of the target chemical plant, selection of the chemical processes 2) Acquisition and estimation of necessary data 3) Decision of the reaction and separation methods 4) Analyses of mass and heat balances of process components 5) Basic design of the chemical equipment 6) Understanding of the process flow and the function of process components 7) Analyses of mass and heat balances of the chemical plant 8) Optimization of the chemical process based on the economic efficiency and safety |
Class Schedule |
lessons 1-3: Evaluation of exiting chemical plants, survey of the supply and demand of chemical products and outline configuration of a new chemical plant lessons 4-6: Acquisition and estimation of fundamental data of the related compounds and approximate calculation of mass balance lessons 7-10: Understanding of the process components, selection and design of suitable unit operations lessons 11-13: Detailed design of the chemical plant, analyses of mass and heat balance, evaluation of the economic efficiency and safety lessons 14 and 15: Summarization of process design lesson 16: Final examination |

Suggestions on Preparation and Review |
Review what you learned in the undergraduate curriculum. Examine the entire process being designed. |
Requirements |
|
Grading Method |
Grading will be determined on planning of the chemical process (30%), detailed calculation of the chemical process (30%), design of the chemical plant (20%) and final examination (10%) evaluated on a 100-point scale. The score above 60-points will pass. |
