Expected Outcome | To understand, acquire, and be able to explain the logical structure and system of the basic disciplines in accordance with each subject and the knowledge and skills necessary for further academic development. |
Class Objectives /Class Outline |
Mechanics is one of the mainstays of physics and engineering as well as electromagnetics, and hence an important subject for students in the department of science and engineering as a foundation to be acquired.
Our goal in General Mechanics is to systematically provide the principles and laws of mechanics for engineering students. Students coming out of this class should have a deep conceptual understanding of classical Newtonian mechanics. This course, General Mechanics I, provides instruction in one-particle dynamics and mathematics required for the understanding of this lecture. |
Class Schedule |
lesson 1: Basis of the vector and the operations such as scalar product, vector product and the calculus lesson 2: Various coordinate systems such as Cartesian coordinate, polar coordinate and cylindrical coordinate system lesson 3: Position, velocity, and acceleration vector and the relationships in terms of temporal differential: Newton’s first law of motion (the law of inertia) and inertial frames of reference. lesson 4: Newton’s second law (Newton’s equation of motion) and third law of motion (law of action and reaction): Methods for solving the differential equations of linear motion with constant acceleration and free-fall motion lesson 5: Methods for solving the constrained motion lesson 6: The equation of simple harmonic motion and the solving method: Complex number and Euler’s formula lesson 7: The methods for solving second order linear ordinary differential equations with constant factors lesson 8: The equation of dumped oscillations and the solving methods: the features of dumped oscillations lesson 9: The equation of forced oscillations and the solving methods: the features of forced oscillations lesson 10: Momentum and Impulse lesson 11: Angular momentum and moment of force lesson 12: Integral representations for the work done by forces: The relationship between work and kinetic energy through the equation of motion lesson13: Conservative forces and potential energy lesson14: Conservation of mechanical energy and the problems for application lesson15: Universal gravitation and the potential energy

Suggestions on Preparation and Review |
Read the textbook and/or handouts very carefully before the each lecture and solve exercises in the textbook after the class. |
Requirements |
Freshmen should take the specified class. The actual class schedule might vary flexibly depending on the students and the situation. So please ask the actual schedule to each teacher of the class. |
Grading Method |
About 70% by the term-end exam and about 30% by the attitude toward the class. |
