Expected Outcome

Class Objectives
/Class Outline The objectives of this course is to show how American literature can be studied as a means to gain insight into a number of important aspects of American society from the Puritan era through modern times. The primary focus will be on the ways in which these texts (short stories, novels, political documents, poems, or films) both reflect and produce discourses related to race, class, gender in each era. Students will also be expected to learn major works by American authors in each period and understand the evolution of American culture and society through these texts.

There will be a short quiz at the end of the last class. Students are also required to submit a term paper on one of the works picked up in the course.
