Major part of the class is lecturing. Short examinations are introduced sometimes. Important to take notes what is written on a blackboard. Textbook is used. A logical way of thinking is required. In 2020, on demand like movies are uploaded to Bb9 and the registered students should look at them in the limited time period. The students are required to submit the reports by the non-returnable form such as a use of report pads. |

Class Objectives /Class Outline |
Continuing from classes of Mechanics of Materials I, learn fundamental theories to conduct the mechanical analyses of solid materials and structures which consist of solid materials.
1) Understand plane stress and strain conditions, and Mohr's circle. Calculate coordinate transformations of stress and strain components.
2) Understand generalized Hookean law used in the three dimensional stress state.
3) Understand criteria of fracture and failure.
4) Learn how to obtain strain energy when solid materials are deformed.
5) Learn how to calculate the buckling force when a column is buckled.
6) Understand a method of calculation of stress in thin-walled cylinders.
7) Understand deformation and stress of framing structures such as trusses or rahmens, and plastic bending and torsion

Class Schedule |
lesson1 Multi-axial stress and stress concentration (Definition of stress components, Equilibrium equation of stress) lesson2 Multi-axial stress and stress concentration (Coordinate transformation of stress, Principal stress, Mohr's stress circle) lesson3 Multi-axial stress and stress concentration (Definition of strain components, Coordinate transformation of strain) lesson4 Multi-axial stress and stress concentration (Relationship between stress and strain, Relationship between elastic moduli) lesson5 Multi-axial stress and stress concentration (Relationship between elastic moduli, Example of combined stress state) lesson6 Multi-axial stress and stress concentration (Example of combined stress state, Stress concentration, Criteria of fracture and failure based on stress) lesson7 Strain energy lesson8 Strain energy (Castigliano's theorem, Examples of analyses by using Castigliano's theorem) lesson9 Buckling (What is the buckling, Buckling of the bar subjected to biased external force) lesson10 Buckling (In the cases of the buckling sujected to compressive external force under various boundary conditions and initial deflection) lesson11 Application (Framing structure - Truss) lesson12 Application (Framing structure - Truss and Rahmen) lesson13 Application (Framing structure - Rahmen, Application to elasto-perfectly-plastic bodies) lesson14 Axi-symmetric problems (Governing equation of thick-walled cylinder subjected to internal and external pressures) lesson15 Axi-symmetric problems (Combined cylinder, Shrink-fitted cylinder)
Short examinations and final examination
[Homework] When a lecture achive the end of chapters, students do homework on their own and submission of homeworks is required in the beginning of next class.
There is a possibility to let students submit their notebooks because taking notebooks is required.
Students should answer for the quiz provide in the class. This is included into the evaluation.
Loose-leaf notebooks and report pads cannot be acceptable for the submission of the notebooks. |

Suggestions on Preparation and Review |
1) Reviewing statics learned in the first grade. 2) Reading textbook and solving example problems to prepare for classes 3) Reviewing topics learned in the each class 4) Provided problems in the end of each chapter on the textbook are solved on their own.

Grading Method |
This subject is not memorized one. Through solving the problems by yourself, the registered students automatically memorize how to solve. There are a lot of problems without any solutions in the actual society. Mainly, a total evaluation includes scores of the final examination and short exams, homeworks, answers to quizes in classes, submission of notebook. 70 % of the evaluation is done by the final examination and 30 % of that is the others. Students who take a grade over 60% of the evaluation can pass. If students who are absent more than four times of classes, they will loose a right to take a final examination. |
