Class Objectives
/Class Outline
This class consists of lectures on powder metallurgy and casting process, which are important sectors of production and processing technology. Students can understand processing principle of powder metallurgy and casting process, important technical issues (perspective for designing good working process), selection of processing method and its improvement through this class. Class objectives are as follows:
1) To acquire the ability to understand and describe the types of casting and their features. (B)
2) To acquire the ability to preparate and design the casting products. (B)
3) To acquire the ability to understand and explain the principles and features of the powder metallurgy processing method. (B)
4) To acquire judgment on introducing sintered parts (powder metallurgy products) into designs of mass-produced equipments. (B)
Class Schedule lesson1 -- Concept of casting
lesson2 -- Various casting process
lesson3 -- Analysis of the casting phenomenon
lesson4 -- Cast iron and its microstructure control
lesson5 -- Defect in casting products
lesson6 -- Special casting process
lesson7 -- Preparation of metal matrix composites by casting
lesson8 -- Introduction of new production technology of sintering-material by powder metallurgy processing method.
lesson9 -- Position occupied in the production and processing outline of powder metallurgy processing method, raw materials
lesson10 -- Molding: transmission of force, lubrication and the movement of the powder in the mold, dimensional accuracy.general properties of the powder.
lesson11 -- Sintering: enhanced binding of the powder particles and the motion of atoms, dimensional changes associated with sintering
lesson12 -- Some sintering mechanisms.
lesson13 -- Features:The material of the sintering machine material, questions of report.
lesson14 -- Development of future expected.
lesson15 -- Spark sintering utilizing electric energy and its sintering mechanism and characteristics of their compacts.

Final examination (twice),
Reports (twice)

Casting part (lesson 1-- lesson 7) will be taught by Sasaki.
Powder metallurgy part (lesson 8-- lesson 15) will be taught by  Matsugi.

Suggestions on
Preparation and
Review
Perusal of handouts and review of keywords in the class.
Requirements It is desirable that students have already learned Materials Science, Mechanical Material I and II, Theory of Plasticity, and Fusion and Solidification Processings I.
Grading Method Grading is determined by achievement of the "Class Objectives" and learning attitude. The achievement of the "Class Objectives" (80% of grading) is assessed by the written final examination, and the learning attitude (20% of grading) is evaluated by two reports. More than 60% of total grading is necessary for passing.
