Class Objectives /Class Outline |
This class consists of lectures on plastic working and welding & joining, which are important sectors of production and processing technology. Students can understand processing principle of plastic working and welding & joining, important technical issues (perspective for designing good working process), selection of processing method and its improvement through this class. Class objectives are as follows: 1) To acquire the ability to understand and describe the types of plastic working (material production, bulk forming, sheet metal forming and so on) and their features. (B) 2) To acquire the ability to estimate forming load and forming limit in plastic working. (B) 3) To acquire the ability to understand and explain the role and the principle of numerical simulation in metal forming process. (B) 4) To acquire the ability to understand and describe the types and features of welding & joining. (B) 5) To acquire the ability to understand and describe the principals of metallurgy and mechanics on welding & joining. (B) 6) To acquire the ability to understand and describe the application of material processes on the actual fabrication through the special lecture. (B) |
Class Schedule |
lesson1-- Types of plastic working (metal forming), viewpoint for good working process lesson2-- Plastic deformation of metallic materials, fundamentals of plasticity lesson3-- Working loads in forging, rolling, extrusion and drawing lesson4-- Fracture limits - ductile fracture in bulk forming and forming limit in sheet metal forming lesson5-- Shape accuracy - thickness accuracy in rolling and springback in sheet metal forming lesson6-- Several topics of plastic working (temperature and speed, thermomechanical treatment, friction) lesson7-- Numerical simulation and optimization of plastic working process lesson8-- Types and principles of welding & joining lesson9-- Arc welding lesson10-- Laser welding, friction Stir Welding, other welding & joining processes lesson11-- Materials and welding metallurgy 1 lesson12-- Materials and welding metallurgy 2 lesson13-- Welding mechanics and fracture phenomena1 lesson14-- Welding mechanics and fracture phenomena2 lesson15-- Special lecture
Final examination (once), Reports
Plastic working part (lesson 1 -- lesson 7) will be taught by Hino. Welding & joining part (lesson8 -- lesson14) will be taught by Yamamoto. Special lecture (lesson15) will be done by engineers from industries, and supported by Hino & Yamamoto. |

Suggestions on Preparation and Review |
Review of keywords in the class and perusal of the reference book. |
Requirements |
It is desirable that students have already learned An Introduction to Engineering Materials, Fundamentals of Materials Processing, Material Science. |
Grading Method |
Grading is determined by achievement of the "Class Objectives" and learning attitude. The achievement of the "Class Objectives" (70% of grading) is assessed by the written final examination, and the learning attitude (30% of grading) is evaluated by reports. More than 60% of total grading is necessary for passing. If the condition of the new coronavirus infection is improved, the final examination may be conducted in person. |
