Class Objectives /Class Outline |
Mechanics of Materials is one of fields to study Solid mechanics. This subject is positioned in the Mechanical Engineering as one of important academics. In the Mechanics of Materials, infinitesimal, one-dimensional and elastic deformation obeying Hookean law.
1) Learning about fundamental theories to calculate stress, strain, deformation, etc. when external forces are applied to a body including solid materials and structures.
2) Leaning about how to obtain stress, strain, deformation when tensile and compressive axial forces are applied to a bar.
3) Learning about how to calculate shear stress, strain and angle of twist when torsional moment is applied to a shaft.
4) Learning how to calculate bending stress, shear stress, deflection and deflection angle when concentrated and distributed forces are acting on beams.

Midterm and final examinations
[Homework] When a lecture achive the end of chapters, students do homework on their own and submission of homeworks is required in the beginning of next class.
There is a possibility to let students submit their notebooks because taking notebooks is required.
Loose-leaf notebooks and report pads cannot be accepted for the submission of the notebooks. |

1) Reviewing statics learned in the first grade. 2) Reading textbook and solving example problems to prepare for classes 3) Reviewing topics learned in the each class 4) Provided problems in the end of each chapter on the textbook are solved on their own.

Grading Method |
Mainly, a total evaluation includes scores of the midterm and final examination, homeworks, answers to quizes in classes, submission of notebook. 60 % of the evaluation is done by the final examination, 20% of that is done by the midterm exam and 20 % of that is done by the others. Students who take a grade over 60% of the evaluation can pass. |
