Class Objectives /Class Outline |
Typical of geography is thinking about the associations between the “places” of geographical phenomena. Maps are tools to transcribe “places,” and maps that show particular phenomena (thematic maps) are tools that allow us to consider and think, as well as being a means to express the findings of surveys and observations. Recently, the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in maps, which comprehensively handle and analyze various forms of geographic information, have become the norm. In this class, students will study regional analysis methods through actual operations and exercises of geographic information systems (ArcGIS), and will consider the possibilities of such use in geographic information systems and their own research. |
Class Schedule |
1. The acquisition of geographic information using GPS 2. Geodetic reference systems and coordinate transformation 3. Summary of GIS and basic operation (includes practicing buffering and geo-processing) 4. Practices of basic GIS operations 5. Basic exercise in thematic mapmaking using e.g. national space foundations 6. Thematic mapmaking using vector diagram data (attribute binding) 7. Population statistics seen in small region statistics (regional division through attribute queries) 8. Vector analysis exercise 1 9. Vector analysis exercise 1 10. Reading and basic analysis of vector diagram data (topographical analysis, three-dimensional display) 11. Reading, reclassification, analysis and totaling of vector diagram data 12. Roster analysis exercise 13. Creating and gathering geographic data (geo-referencing, creation of vector and roster data) 14. Examples of regional analysis using GIS 1 15. Examples of regional analysis using GIS 2 |
