Class Objectives /Class Outline |
In this course, Japanese Tourism is taken as an example to understand the basic concepts of tourism geography. The social and political background for tourism development in Japan will be discussed. Special emphasis will be on the regional structures that have been created through tourism and themselves create tourism. Through the example of Japan, impacts of tourism and tourism development can be assessed. The following themes will be discussed: |

1 What is tourism geography? 2 History of Japanese tourism 3 Social, economic and political background 4 Social, economic and political background 5 Tourism resources and attractions (Research example 1: Religious tourism) 6 Tourism resources and attractions 7 Tourism behavior (Research example 2: Marine and diving tourism) 8 Tourism behavior 9 Tourism industries 10 Welcome to Japan (Research example 3: Tourism online tools) 11 Sustainability: impacts of tourism on destinations (SDGs) 12 Resilience: tourism, disaster and pandemic (Research example 4: Accommodation) 13 Group Presentations 14 Special tourism destinations (Research example 5: Ecotourism) 15 Group Presentations; conclusions Contents of Research examples can change.
Each theme will consist of a lecture part and a part where students work in groups or make presentations. Stundents will discuss one topic connected to tourism and present their results in class.

Grading Method |
Tasks in class or homework: 80 points Group presentation and report: 20 points If students miss a class, they will miss the assignment in that class and therefore the points. In case of illnes, some of the tasks can be handed in later to make up for the missing points if the teacher is contacted before the class. |
