Class Objectives

In this course, Japanese Tourism is taken as an example to understand the basic concepts of tourism geography. The social and political background for tourism development in Japan will be discussed. Special emphasis will be on the regional structures that have been created through tourism and themselves create tourism.  Through the example of Japan, impacts of tourism and tourism development can be assessed. The following themes will be discussed:

(Research example 1: Religious tourism)

7 Tourism behavior

10 Welcome to Japan
(Research example 3: Tourism online tools)
11 Sustainability: impacts of tourism on destinations (SDGs)
12 Resilience: tourism, disaster and pandemic
(Research example 4: Accommodation)

Contents of Research examples can change.


Each theme will consist of a lecture part and a part where students work in groups or make presentations. Stundents will discuss one topic connected to tourism and present their results in class.

For each lecture, preparation will be announced in class.
For each lecture, re-read the material from the class before. 
Requirements This class has to be taken together with Japanese Tourism I
Any mails concerning this class should include the class name "Japanese Tourism" in the mail title. 
Grading Method Tasks in class or homework: 80 points
Group presentation and report: 20 points
If students miss a class, they will miss the assignment in that class and therefore the points. In case of illnes, some of the tasks can be handed in later to make up for the missing points if the teacher is contacted before the class.
