The Mogao Caves in Dunhuang are a treasure house of Chinese history research materials, with murals (visual materials) dating from the 4th to 13th centuries covering an area of 45,000 square meters. Furthermore, an enormous hoard of manuscripts, which is said to include more than 60,000 works, the so-called Dunhuang manuscripts, was discovered in the Library Cave of the Mogao Caves of Dunhuang in early summer 1900. These murals and manuscripts are kept and studied as an important resource for academic research. Many historical mysteries have been unveiled so far by Dunhuangology, in which these research materials are investigated.
The Dunhuang manuscripts are believed to be documents stored in Buddhist temples in Dunhuang and the cave where the manuscripts were placed was sealed for some reason around 1000 CE. The manuscripts include not only Buddhist sutras, Taoist and Confucian texts, and other religious documents, but also contain many documents used by common people, such as account books and other economic documents, preaching manuscripts, astrology books, folk songs that were popular at that time, novels, educational materials, and records written about folk beliefs. These documents helped us to gain an understanding of the social situation and everyday life of ordinary people at that time, something that is usually hidden behind the scenes of history and not fully recognized.
In this course, we will read a manuscript of prosimetric literature called bianwen from these Dunhuang manuscripts as a textbook and discuss the Chinese culture we can see in it.
