Class Objectives
/Class Outline Students will analyse, and be expected to produce two different types of short essay, written in an academic style. Students will learn the basics of Academic Writing, formulating a thesis statement, paragraph structure, developing a coherent argument, and redrafting based on peer comments. This course will be introductory, but students will be expected to produce short, original pieces of writing that include the above mentioned elements. Students will also be expected to study academic vocabulary and will have vocabulary quizzes most weeks.

            In class: write a paragraph about a key idea in your major

lesson3 A coherent paragraph
lesson4 In class: peer editing. Is the paragraph coherent?
            Redrafted paragraph to be typed up and submitted for assessment

lesson5 From paragraph to short essay
lesson6 Making a thesis statement.
           Plan a short essay about your major.

lesson7 : Descriptive essays
lesson8 Brainstorming and outlining: Write 1st draft of an essay describing your major (to be completed for homework)
lesson9 Examining a short essay: Peer reviewing 1st draft.
lesson10  Based on peer/teacher comments, rewrite your descriptive essay.
       Redrafted descriptive essay to be typed up and submitted for assessment

lesson11 Comparative Essays
lesson12 Brainstorming and outlining: Write 1st draft of  an essay comparing two places (to be completed for homework)
lesson13 Examining a short essay: Peer reviewing of comparative essay 1st draft
lesson14 : Editing your writing: Rewrite your comparative essay.
           Redrafted comparative essay to be typed up and submitted for assessment

lesson15 : Assessed Timed Writing and Academic Vocabulary Test.
