Class Objectives
/Class Outline In this class we will develop persuasive communication skills using both formal (academic) and informal (conversational) structures of debate. In the early stages of the course, we will learn the basic concepts and terminology used in academic debates. The students will learn what debate is, what skills are required to debate effectively, and how to implement a debate in the classroom. In the latter stages of the course, we will consider various controversial issues in order to stimulate lively discussion and debate (both formal and informal) in the classroom. This course is open to both Japanese native speakers, and speakers of other languages, including English, and as a result, offers unique challenges and opportunities to all students.
