Class Objectives /Class Outline |
Invention and innovation are similar but different. No matter how novel an invention may be, it cannot become an innovation unless the invention is commercialized. One major reason Japan's economy has stagnated over the past few decades is because Japanese companies are losing their capacity to innovate. Despite Japan's advances in science and technology, there are not enough people who are able to transform R&D outcomes into viable businesses. This is partly why even scientists are being driven to become more entrepreneurial. This course will enable students to gain insights on entrepreneurship through lectures and in-class exercises, and also learn the basics of business creation. The course will focus on the commercialization of technology. Students will learn the difference between product development and customer development. Exercises are designed to deepen learning. No prior business knowledge is required. An additional learning objective is to improve communication skills, so students are required to be actively engaged in class. |
