This class will be of strong interest for all international students, including IGS, HUSA and AIMS as an opportunity to learn about Japanese culture in practice. It is also useful for all students who want to experience a non-competitive way of educating their body while interacting with others.

Through the example of Aikido, students will learn about the comprehensive concept of Japanese Martial Arts (Budo), including breathing, basics of human movements, the concept of ki and the connection of self defense and budo. They will also experience how to educate their body and mind together through the movements of Aikido.

lesson3 Practice: Teaching Methods – Experiencing a general Aikido class
lesson4 Lecture and Practice: Breathing methods and concepts – Breath power
lesson5 Practice: Joint-twisting and pinning waza
lesson6 Lecture and Practice: Concepts of destabilizing of the opponent – unbalancing, absorbing, projecting power
lesson7 Practice: Empty-handed encounters, usage of weapons and methods for dealing with armed opponents
lesson8 Lecture and Practice: Principles of movements – biomechanics (Spiral, circular movements)
lesson9 Lecture and Practice: The Concept of aiki in the movements – harmonizing and flow
lesson10 Aikido and spirituality – Aikido in the 21st Century – Sports and Aikido

Requirements This class includes Aikido practice. Students should bring sports wear with long sleaves/ legs. No special wear required.
