Class Objectives

This lecture introduces basic biochemistry and fundamental chemical compounds involved in biological activities such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, lipids, and physiologically active substances.
Students are encouraged to be able to understand and explain
1. Basic technical terms in biochemistry.
2. Principle of acids, bases, and buffer solution. Calculation of the concentration of hydrogen ions and pH.
3. Chemical structures and functions of amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids.
4. Purification and analytical methods for proteins and nucleic acids.
5. Basic principles of biosynthesis and energy metabolisms.

The intermediary and final examinations will be held in a class room. However, an online system or report handout may be substituted with them depending on the COVID-19 situation in Hiroshima university.
