[Summary]
In this course, we will experience and learn more about Korean (South Korean, North Korean and zainichi Korean) culture through literature and movies.
[Goals]
The goals of this course are for students:
-To develop media literacy competencies (ability to evaluate and analyze information);
- To develop their ability to describe in their own words, no matter how inadequate they may seem, what literature, movies, and expressions are; and
- To develop their understanding of others and imagination skills to think about others (what and who the others are), through the encounter of Korean culture as other culture.

Korean History (compiled by the Japan Association for Korean History, published by SANSEIDO, Co., Ltd., 1995)
History of Koreans in Japan (compiled by the ‘History of Koreans in Japan’ Book Publication Committee, published by Akashi Shoten, 2006)

Students are required to read the above reference books and other literary works announced in class in advance of each class.
* Students are encouraged to watch a series of documentary films directed by Michael Moore, prior to class, in order to gain better understanding of American capitalism (military-industrial complex).

Requirements  
Grading Method Evaluation is made on the basis of class attendance (30%), participation and involvement in class (30%) and class assignments and papers (40%).

Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it  
Message How much do you know about South Korea, North Korea or Koreans in Japan? Do you have any knowledge of them other than those obtained from mass media? Can you imagine the faces of ordinary people of neighboring South Korea or North Korea or Koreans in Japan?

Knowing others is the key to knowledge of the self. Knowing Korea (South Korea, North Korea or Koreans in Japan) is the best way to understanding Japan. If you do not know about Korea, you do not know about Japan.

Get rid of your preconceptions of Korea and meet new Korea as others. This may turn people’s interest from the U.S. to East Asia and this may lead to peace in East Asia. How about if we discuss Korea, Japan and peace in East Asia together?

I hope that you value your feelings above all in participating in this course. Focus on your own words, stories and poems. I hope that you will try to write one poem or story through this course. It does not matter whether you can write it well or not.
