Class Objectives

Students will learn about the basics of protein and enzyme chemistry, especially about properties and characteristics of enzyme/protein.
Lecture will be provided by two or three faculty members of the Molecular Agro-Life Science Program. 
Class Schedule Lesson1: Amino acids and four levels of organization in the structure of the protein
  Polypeptide, side chain, noncovalent bond, primary structure, secondary structure, tertiary structure, quaternary structure

Lesson2: Protein conformation and bond angle in polypeptide
  Ramachandran plot, α helix, β sheet, domain

Lesson3: Various proteins found in organisms
  Hemoglobin, actin,  collagen, capsid of virus, amyloid, prion disease

Lesson4: How cells obtain energy from food
  ATP, glycolysis, citric acid cycle, substrate-level phosphorylation

Lesson5: Mitochondria and its energy conversion
  Chemiosmotic coupling, respiratory chain, ATP synthase, oxidative phosphorylation

Lesson6: Three respiratory-chain proton pumps
  NADH dehydrogenase, cytochrome c reductase, cytochrome c oxidase

Lesson7: Chloroplasts and photosynthesis1 Light reaction
  Chlorophyll, Charge separation, Photosystem, Cytochrome bf, Z scheme, Ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase
