Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Students can study how to calculate material and energy balance and stoichiometric relation to understand chemical process and quantitative approach. Students can acquire basic method to understand whole picture of chemical process required as a chemical engineer by this lecture. This method is one of basic common methods to apply chemical industry, various manufacturing industries, biotechnology industries and energy industries.

The evaluation items are as follows.
1) Students can understand calculation of the chemical process.
2) Students can understand handling of the mass and system of unit.
3) Students can understand the relation of PVT of ideal and real gases.
4) Students can understand calculation of material balance in chemical process.
5) Students can understand the change of physical state and the calculation of enthalpy balance. 
Class Schedule Lesson 1: Handling of unit and how to calculate unit conversion
Lesson 2: Equation of state of real gas and calculation of vapor pressure
Lesson 3: Basis of material balance
Lesson 4: Material balance related to separation and mixing
Lesson 5: Key terms for handling of chemical reaction
Lesson 6: Material balance with chemical reaction
Lesson 7: Material balance in combustion process
Lesson 8: Material balance in chemical process
Lesson 9: Material balance in chemical process with recycle
Lesson 10: Mid-term examination
Lesson 11: Change of physical state and enthalpy balance
Lesson 12: Chemical reaction and enthalpy balance (heat of reaction, heat of formation and heat of combustion)
Lesson 13: Calorific value of fuel, and effect of temperature and pressure on heat of reaction
Lesson 14: Enthalpy balance in chemical process
Lesson 15: General review and practice

A mid-term and a term-end examination are scheduled.

A small test is performed at the end of each lecture, so refer to an exercise of a textbook. Check a notebook again and be sure to review.
Lesson 1: Unit conversion (Chapter 1 and 2)
Lesson 2: Equation of state and Antoine equation (Chapter 3 and 4)
Lesson 3-9: Calculation of material balance (Chapter 5 and 6)
Lesson 10-14: The enthalpy balance (Chapter 7 and 8)
Requirements Practice is performed each lesson, so attend all lessons. 
Grading Method A mid-term examination (40%), a term-end examination (40%), practice problems (10%) and reports (10%)
More than 60 points is passed.

Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it A faculty member with experience working at a major chemical fiber company will explain the material balance and enthalpy balance of a chemical plant.
